We’re not for merger, coalition -PDP Governors

Party’ll bounce back ahead of 2027 -Jerry Gana

The hope for a coalition of different parties to unseat the All Progressives Congress(APC) has suffered a major setback as the main opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, has said the party is not considering a merger with any other political group ahead of 2027.

The group which arguably has the highest level of influence in the party said that while other parties are welcome to join the PDP, the party remains intact and focused.

AbeyaNews reports that the position of the PDP governors came just as a member of the Board of Trustees of the party, Prof Jerry Gana dismissed any call for a coalition, saying the party would bounce back before the next general election.

In a communiqué issued at the end of their meeting in Ibadan, Oyo State, the governors foreclosed any room for a merger, saying

the party remains intact and focused.

The communique stated that as part of the preparations for the party’s national convention, the Zoning Committee will be chaired by Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, with Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal serving as Vice Chairman.

Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang will act as Secretary.

According to the communique, the National Convention Committee will be led by Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri as Chairman, with Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke as Vice Chairman, and Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah as Secretary.

The forum concluded the meeting by expressing deep appreciation to Governor Seyi Makinde, the government, and the people of Oyo State for their hospitality.

Present at the meeting were Governors Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Peter Mbah (Enugu), Agbu Kefas (Taraba), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), the host, Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Ademola Adeleke (Osun), and Douye Diri (Bayelsa).

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori and Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno were represented by their deputies.

Notably absent was the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara.

Meanwhile, former Minister for information and National Orientation and member, BOT member of the party, Professor Jerry Gana asserted the party will not join any coalition or merge with any political party ahead of the 2027 general elections in the country.

Professor Gana said that despite the current setback being experienced by the party, PDP is a very solid and organized political party and absolutely trusted by Nigerians, stressing that the leaders of the party are doing serious underground work to bring the party back to where it should be ahead of 2027 general elections.

Speaking to the media shortly after attending this year’s Nupe Christian Fellowship International Conference in Bida, Niger state at the weekend, he pointed out that now that the PDP is an opposition party, all kinds of things are happening but assured Nigerians and the party supporters that the party will soon resolve all the issues at hand.

According to him,” right now, the PDP is in opposition, so there are all kind of things that are happening but let Nigerians wait, we will soon come up to resolve all the issues at hand right now and move forward and give the nation an alternative that will be very clear, very credible and very desirable.

“Forget about the struggle to be here and there because there is a new political order that is emerging but let Nigerians give the PDP a few months; we will correct it and give Nigerians a better and clear alternative.

“PDP is a very solid and organized political party and absolutely trusted by Nigerians. PDP took over power from the Military and we restored democracy, good governance, fairness, justice, and equity in the country”.

Professor Gana who expressed regret over the current economic and security situation in the country, stated that Nigeria as a country was doing greatly well under PDP, adding that “the country’s economy was doing so well; Nigeria paid her foreign debts and put up institutions that are very durable. It was unfortunate that some people made some few mistakes because they don’t know how to govern”.
