We’re disappointed over Emergency rule in Rivers -ACF
The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has expressed disappointment over the emergency rule imposed on Rivers State by the Federal Government, saying it was unfortunate that such action was coming from individuals who advanced the cause of democracy in the country before now.
The National Publicity Secretary of ACF, Prof. Tukur Muhammad-Baba told newsmen that the emergency rule was a situation that should have been avoided if the nation’s leaders acted earlier enough.
“Our immediate response is that of disappointment. But of course, we are disappointed because of the high handedness of the action of the National Assembly which is a threat to democracy. But the oversight functions of the legislators are missing in this stage.
“This governor won an election, there should have been another way to allow him remain in office. But it looks like there are determined attempts to subvert democracy in the sense that this government is headed by individuals who played significant roles in advancing the cause of democracy, and to see them subverting democracy is doubly disappointing. ACF will react again with more comprehensive reports as time goes on.
“Our disappointment has been heightened by the speed with which everything is going.
“This matter has been simmering for a long time and it should have been nipped in the bud if the action was taken by those who are taking it now, only to allow it to be generating crisis is disappointing. It was completely avoidable. But it was not avoided and we are now resorting to this harsh action laid down for lovers of democracy. We will see how it goes”, Prof. Muhammad-Baba said.
