The President of Senior Staff Club, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Prof. Innocent Nnamchi, has said that the next substantive Vice Chancellor (VC) of the institution must possess the capacity to reposition the university.
The UNN Governing Council is expected to appoint a substantive VC in the next five months to take over from the Acting VC, Prof. Oguejiofo Ujam.
Nnamchi said this on Saturday in Nsukka – yesterday, March 15 – while interacting with newsmen on his plan and programmes for the club.
He also said that such a VC must have the vision to make UNN “one among the best universities in the world”.
He said that UNN, as the first indigenous university in Nigeria, “is yawning for a substantive VC, who will put service first” and have the capacity to reposition the institution, in terms of quality teaching, learning and research.
“The incoming substantive VC should have the capacity and vision to push for the best so that university staff will be able to publish their academic works in top world journals.
“This will not only bring financial rewards but also make the university a household name globally.
“We want a VC who has the capacity and vision to reposition the university to rank as the best in Nigeria, Africa and one of the best globally,” Nnamchi said.
For the club, Nnamchi, a Professor of Industrial and Environmental Biotechnology, said he planned to leave the club better than he met it by carrying everybody along.
He further said that his administration would expand sports activities in the club by adding basketball, badminton and volleyball courts, among others, to the present football pitch and lawn tennis courts in the club.
“I will also make the children’s games a top-notch in the club so that while their parents are playing their games, the children will also be playing theirs,” the don said.
He disclosed that his administration would from time to time invite prominent Nigerians to talk to members on the state of the nation, so that members would also make their own input.
“The club will also periodically invite medical experts to give members talk and tips on wellness that will enable us to maintain a healthy life,” Nnamchi said.
Nnamchi, a Lecturer in the Department of Microbiology, was elected President of the Club on February 14.
