Tinubu sends Shettima to UK to bring body home as Buhari dies in London, orders flag to fly at half-staff

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to immediately travel to the United Kingdom to accompany the body of former President Muhammadu Buhari back to Nigeria.

The decision followed the death of his predecessor, who passed on today in London at approximately 4:30 pm after a prolonged illness.

A State House press statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, said the President had earlier personally spoken to Mrs. Aishat Buhari, the widow of the late President, offering his heartfelt condolences and support at this difficult time for the former First Family.

According to the statement, President Tinubu has also ordered that, in honour of the late former president, all the national flag be flown at half-staff as a mark of respect.

Buhari served as Nigeria’s President after being elected in 2015 and re-elected in 2019.

He previously led the nation as military head of state from January 1984 to August 1985.
