Plateau Killings: Northern Elders Forum demands Justice for victims

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has strongly condemned the recent spate of killings in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, describing the attacks as unacceptable and calling for urgent government intervention.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Forum’s spokesperson, Professor Abubakar Jika Jiddere, the NEF decried what it termed the “continued mass murder and destruction” in the region, lamenting the alleged failure of the government to protect lives and property of the people.
“It is unacceptable that such acts of mass murder and destruction continue unabated, with little to no meaningful response from those charged with safeguarding the nation,” the statement read, adding, “the silence and inaction of the Federal Government can no longer be tolerated.”
The forum demanded the immediate deployment of well-equipped security personnel to Plateau State to end the killings and restore law and order. It further urged the government to ensure that those responsible are swiftly apprehended and brought to justice.
“The government must not only apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators but must do so swiftly and decisively. The blood of innocent Nigerians cries out for justice, and there must be no sanctuary for those who orchestrate or enable these horrors,” NEF stated.
Beyond security intervention, the NEF also called for the establishment of an independent investigative panel to probe the killings. The panel’s findings, the forum insisted, must be made public to ensure transparency and accountability.
The group also advocated for adequate compensation for the victims and affected communities, many of whom, it said, have suffered “unimaginable loss.”
“We stand in full solidarity with the people of Plateau State and all affected regions. We extend our deepest condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives in these senseless attacks,” the statement added. “Enough is enough. The time for words has passed—this is a time for bold, decisive, and just action.”
