The Osun State Government has condemned the unlawful arrest and detention of citizens by the police, particularly concerning the recent case of Apesin Abiodun Adegoke and Iyiola Monsuru, who were reportedly arrested for allegedly defaming Bola Oyebamiji, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement issued this morning – today, Wednesday January 14, 2026 – by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, the government expressed alarm at the police’s handling of the matter, highlighting inconsistencies in their statements.
“Our attention has been drawn to a press statement issued by the Osun State Police Command, which was subsequently deleted and replaced with a revised version. This conduct underscores the lack of professionalism and coherence that has characterized the handling of this matter,” Alimi stated.
He criticized the police for misleading the public by claiming that the petition leading to the arrests was submitted by Bola Oyebamiji, which Alimi argued is patently false.
He clarified that the petition was actually filed by the APC Chairman of Irewole Local Government, Mr. Arimiyau Owoade, alleging that statements made affected the APC candidate from his local government.
The statement further contended that the police’s assertion that the suspects were “invited” was inaccurate.
“At no time were Mr. Adegoke or Mr. Monsuru invited. They were arrested without prior notice, almost as if it were a gestapo operation rather than a democratic police force,” he countered.
Alimi highlighted that Mr. Adegoke was arrested on January 7, 2026, during his normal activities, which the police misleadingly described as his “hideout.”
He also refuted claims that Adegoke confessed to any wrongdoing and called on the police to provide credible evidence to support such allegations.
Moreover, he pointed out discrepancies regarding Adegoke’s arraignment.
“The police claimed he was arraigned on January 9, 2026, yet they granted him administrative bail on the night of January 12, 2026. This contradicts their previous statement and exposes the falsity of their narrative,” Alimi stated.
He further elaborated that Adegoke had formally applied for bail on January 8, 2026, which received no response from the police.
“When the Commissioner of Police refused to release him, his counsel was compelled to send a reminder letter referencing the earlier bail application,” Alimi explained.
Defending the legality of Adegoke’s rights, Alimi cited provisions in the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) and the Police Act, stating that suspects arrested for non-capital offenses must be released on bail if not arraigned within 24 hours.
The Osun State Government emphasized that the police must remain apolitical and professional, highlighting the need for accountability for any abuse of power.
“These irregularities indicate that the police have forced themselves into a mold. Our position is clear: the Osun Police Command should adjust and remain professional,” Alimi added.
