Northern Governors, royal fathers endorse state police, urge swift action by lawmakers

Northern Governors and traditional rulers in the region have endorsed the creation of state police in an effort to address rising security challenges across the country.
The resolution was reached during a high-level joint meeting held under the aegis of the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) in Kaduna, where key political leaders and traditional institutions from Northern Nigeria convened to deliberate on the escalating insecurity and other challenges affecting the region.
AbeyaNews reports that during the meeting attended by governors of the 19 Northern states and the Chairmen of the 19 Northern States Traditional Rulers’ Councils, the forum acknowledges the critical role of non-partisan cooperation, collaboration, and peer review in effectively addressing the numerous developmental challenges confronting the northern region and the nation at large.
As contained in the communiqué issued at the end of the joint meeting, after exhaustive deliberations on matters of regional interest, particularly security, the forum resolved to strengthen peculiar local initiatives in combating all forms of security challenges and to set up an inter-state platform to coordinate surveillance on joint borders.
The communiqué which was signed by Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, Governor of Gombe State and Chairman, of the forum further disclosed that while the leaders commend President, Tinubu, for his sustained commitment to addressing the security challenges and infrastructural deficits in the region, it also resolved to liaise with the Nigerian Governors Forum to work out modalities to increase support to the Federal Security Agencies.
