Bayelsa: Police arrest girls involved in viral video assaulting varsity girl in Bayelsa

Operatives of Zone 16 of the Nigerian Police Command have arrested suspects captured in a viral video assaulting a student of the Federal University in Otuoke, Bayelsa State.
The suspects were said to have beaten their victim and stripped her naked over a purported dispute over a lover.
The viral video, which was posted on Sunday on a Facebook site identified as Yentown, showed three girls descending on a girl, identified as Nancy, with heavy slaps and blows over allegations of sleeping with a boy, who many believed was their lover.
The suspects ensured their assault of their victim was recorded and had her hair braids cut off with a sharp object to ‘’teach her a lesson’’.
Investigations revealed that the operatives of the Zone 16, with the assistance of the FOU security, apprehended the key suspects identified as Kadi.
Kadi said to be a student of the Social Work department of the FOU provided useful information that led to the arrest of the other suspects.
Already, some women’s groups against Gender violence have condemned the case of assault and violence displayed in the viral video.
The Association of Women Against Gender Based Violence and the Do Foundation have expressed shock over the level of violence displayed by the girls against their fellow girls in the viral video.
In the statement issued on Monday by the President of the Association of Women Against Gender Based Violence, Dr. Dise Ogbise Goddy Harry, the group expressed shock over the incident.
“This ordinarily is not what we expect from young ladies who should be responsible and law-abiding citizens.
“It’s sad and embarrassing that my own gender is on the front burner of social media with a very shameful exhibition of violence and assault due to reasons we still can not fathom. This incident raises so many criminal issues of assault occasioning harm, character assassination, threat to life, and cybercrime. We will most humbly suggest that all relevant security agencies spring into action and investigate the matter.
“We are also ceasing this medium to call on the victim to cooperate with security agencies in the investigation of this incident.”
