Yari under fire for breaching Covid-19 safety protocol at Kano airport

Despite Federal Government’s warning, penultimate week, barring aides to VIPs from the terminal areas of the country’s airports, former Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari, has now come under fire for breaching the safety protocol at the Aminu Kano International Airport, in Kano.

Abeyanews gathered that Yari reportedly conducted himself violently as he pushed away officers of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) said to be legitimately doing their jobs, stationed at the Kano airport, claiming to be a VIP, last weekend.

Abeyanews recalls that Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika had on July 2, 2020, directed that aides of VIP passengers would henceforth be stopped from accessing the terminal and that VIPs, on their part, would be subject to the full safety protocols at the airports, when flights resumes.

Reacting to the incident, Wednesday, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) condemned Yari’s behavior and berated the former governor for allegedly violating public health protocols at the Kano airport, Saturday.

The agency, made available to Abeyanews, therefore, cautioned VIPs to respect the Presidential directive by observing the public Health travel protocols put in place at the airports.

”The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) hereby strongly condemns the conduct of the former Governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari, who blatantly violated the Public Health procedures (#COVID19) on travels at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport on Saturday 11th July 2020.

“He refused to adhere to the protocols and procedures put in place by the Federal Government through the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on #COVID19 by forcefully pushing away an officer of the Environment department when he insisted that his luggage must be disinfected.

“The former Governor said the officer should have known he is a VIP. This irresponsible act endangers all other airport users, it is unacceptable, and as such it has been duly escalated.

“FAAN hereby cautions all airport users, especially our esteemed VIPs, to please respect the Presidential directive by observing the public Health travel protocols put in place to protect all air travellers against infection and the spread of the covid-19 pandemic.”

Abeyanews recalls that part of the safety protocols put in place on resumption of commercial aviation July 8 was barring aides to VIP from following their bosses into the terminal areas of the airport or seek to follow their principals to restricted areas only meant for travelling public or park their cars at unauthorised places at airport.

“These aides also disobey all the parking rules at airport threatening to beat up any person who dare to challenge them .In some cases beat up airport authority staff for daring to challenge them.

“Most culpable are aides to military officer, police and other para-military officers,” the directive read.
