Triumphant home-coming for Ugwuanyi, Enugu Governor, as Nsukka holds ‘unity rally’ for him

The people of Enugu North Senatorial District, better known as Nsukka cultural Zone, have passed a vote of confidence in Governor Ifeanyi Ugwaunyi of Enugu State who comes from the zone, hailing him as a focused leader and man of peace.

At a unity rally held yesterday in honour of the Governor, the who is who in the cultural zone and thousands of people from all walks of life gathered at the foregrounds of Nsukka High School to honour Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi whose leadership style the people unanimously hailed as serving the State and the zone very well.

Declaring support for Ugwuanyi whom they reassured of continued support, they commended him for his administration’s sustained efforts at developing the zone, which they said had been marginalised over the years.

The people also praised the Governor for entrenching peace and good governance in Enugu State generally.

In his speech at the event, All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain and Ugwuanyi’s strongest challenger in last year’s governorship election, Senator Ayogu Eze expressed his appreciation to Ugwuanyi for his remarkable achievements in Nsukka area in particular and Enugu State in general, notwithstanding the nation’s economic, security and public health challenges.

Reiterating his unalloyed support for the Governor, Eze, a journalist who was a former Commissioner for Information in Enugu State and former Chairman of the Senate Committees on Information and Works, said: “This gathering is to reassure you that your people are solidly behind you…march on and move on.”

Stressing that he was very happy to be alive to witness the event at which Ndi Nsukka gathered in unity to show support and solidarity to one of their own, in the person of Ugwuanyi, Eze also charged the Governor to continue with his laudable vision for the zone and State.

Others who spoke at the event included former Governor of old Enugu State, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo; the member representing Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South Federal Constituency, Pat Asadu; the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo; the Bishops of Nsukka Catholic and Anglican Dioceses, Prof. Godfrey Igwebuike Onah and Most Rev. Alloysius Agbo respectively, Nsukka Professors, 145 traditional rulers in the zone who came with their cabinet members, and the Chairman of “Odimma” Nsukka, organisers of the event, Chief Vita Abba, among others.

According to Abba, the group felt it was important for Nsukka to unite and come together in support of one of their own who is Governor of the State, encourage him and offer prayers for his continued success till the end of his tenure.

“Our support for Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi is irrevocable,” he declared.

For his part, President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nwodo, spoke in the same direction, reemphasizing the need for the people of Nsukka zone to unite and rally round the Governor, saying: “We were marginalized in the past but Gov. Ugwuanyi has wiped away our tears.”

Former Governor of old Enugu State, Dr. Nwodo, said it was a thing of joy for him that he was alive to see another Nsukka Governor after him, and urged the good people of Nsukka zone to also unite and take advantage of their numerical strength to give Ugwuanyi the maximum support he deserved.

Reaffirming their firm support for Ugwuanyi, the 145 traditional rulers in Enugu North Senatorial District assured the Governor, whom they described as a “worthy son”, of their support.

Declaring that “we are solidly behind you,” the traditional rulers pledged their consistent support and prayers, saying: “Wherever you are going, we will go with you.”

Speaking on behalf of Nsukka Professors, Prof. Fabian Onah of the Department of Public Administration and Local Government, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, expressed his personal and group’s gratitude to Ugwuanyi for what he described as the Governor’s  “massive infrastructural development” in Enugu State, maintaining that “we are solidly behind you and will continue to pray for you to realize more successes in this last lap of your tenure.”

Other speakers including Senator Utazi, Rt. Hon. Asadu, Bishop Onah and Bishop Agbo, also extolled the Governor’s leadership qualities and assured him of the unalloyed support and solidarity of the people of the zone.

Responding, Ugwuanyi thanked Ndi Nsukka for their demonstration of love, support, solidarity and goodwill and reassured them of his administration’s commitment to the sustenance of peace, unity and good governance in the State.
