Tragedy, as three children are found dead inside car in Enugu community

From PAT NNADI, Nsukka

Call it mystery, man’s inhumanity to man or outright wickedness and you may not be entirely far from the truth.

Yesterday, the people of Ugwu Ogede Itchi, Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area of Enugu State were hit by an inexplicable tragedy, what with the discovery of the lifeless bodies of three children in a car parked in a nearby compound.

The names of the victims which were given as Chibugo Eze, Chinenye Eze, and Ebuka Eze, had gone to fetch water at a commercial borehole owned by, and located at the home of, a former police officer, but did not return home alive.

It was also gathered that two children, Kingsley Eze, and Mmasichukwu who were among the children that went to the journey of no return were equally rescued from the same car and rushed to the hospital where they were resuscitated.

Our reporter gathered that parents of the children had earlier raised an alarm when their children who had gone to the aforementioned borehole at about 8 am on Sunday to fetch water could not return home as usual.

It was further gathered that amid the confusion and panic that ensued, the parents of the five children raised search parties who ransacked every nook and cranny of the community but could not find the missing children.

Though the parents of the deceased children could not speak to us, the traditional ruler of the community, HRH, Igwe Ike Oke, while narrating the incident to AbeyaNews described the news as mysterious and unusual.

The monarch, who happened to be the chairman of Igbo-Eze South Traditional Rulers Council said he also mobilised members of the local Vigilante and Forest Guard groups who joined in the search for the missing children.

“We were almost frustrated in our search when a community member who went to fetch water heard the voice of a little child calling her name,” Igwe Oke further narrated. “She traced the voice to a car that had been parked for over six months in the compound where she discovered the children and raised the alarm.

The three dead children and the car in which they were suffocated to death
…And the two survivors

“We found three of the children already dead by the time we opened the car. I think they suffocated to death because the car doors were stiff when we tried to open it at first but we engaged an artisan who forced it open.”

“One of the two children rescued said they went to fetch water but didn’t meet anyone at the borehole because the owner and the entire members of the family had gone to church service,” Igwe Oke added.

“He informed us that they were about going home when three hooded men came from a hill beside the scene of the incident and abducted them into the car and left. He said they were all dressed in red cloths. He also said that the hoodlums returned at the middle of the night to take them away but they couldn’t open the car doors because they were stiffened.

“We are still investigating the incident and the dead victims have been deposited in the mortuary. The owner of the house where the victims were found dead have been arrested by police.”

In his own reaction, the youth leader of Nkalagu-Obukpa community where two of the victims hailed from, Ifeanyi Eze, told AbeyaNews that the incident was as shocking as it was tragic.

He further stated that leaders in the community were working tirelessly to unravel the circumstances surrounding the mysterious death of the children.

However, AbeyaNews could not reach the Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe for comments as efforts to that effect proved abortive.

Apparently busy, DSP Ndukwe would neither pick any of the several calls placed to his phone by our reporter nor respond to the text message sent to his phone.

However, a senior police officer at Ibagwa-Aka divisional police headquarters, who pleaded anonymity, confirmed the incident to AbeyaNews.
