Senate Passes Bill for Establishment of Federal Medical Centre, Obukpa, Enugu State

The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has given its concurrence with the House of Representatives and passed, at the Third Reading, the Bill for an Act to Amend the Federal Medical Centres Act, 2022, for the establishment of the Federal Medical Centre, Obukpa, Enugu State.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, presiding over plenary session, commended the collaborative efforts between both chambers, stating that the concurrence on the bill reflects the NASS’ unified commitment to improving healthcare access for Nigerians.
The Bill, sponsored and initiated by Hon. Chidi Mark Obetta, Member representing Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South Federal Constituency, was passed by the House of Representatives on May 21, 2025 and forwarded to the Senate for concurrence.
AbeyaNews reports that with the Senate’s concurrence, the Bill will now be transmitted to the President for assent.
Hon. Obetta described the development as a landmark legislative victory for the good people of Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South Federal Constituenc, and the entire Enugu North Senatorial Zone. He commended his colleagues in both chambers for their bipartisan support and reaffirmed his commitment to attracting more developmental projects to the constituency.
“The establishment of the Federal Medical Centre, Obukpa, will bring quality healthcare services closer to our people, decongest existing medical facilities, and create opportunities for employment, training, and research.
“This project is not just about infrastructure; it is about saving lives, empowering communities, and securing a healthier future for generations to come”,Hon. Obetta stated.
Hon. Obetta also extended appreciation to the Senate leadership, the Committee on Health (Secondary and Tertiary) in both Chambers, and his constituents for their continued support and prayers throughout the legislative process.
“I call on our people to remain united and supportive as we move to the next phase, the presidential assent and eventual implementation of this historic project. Together, we can achieve even greater progress for our constituency and ensure that Nsukka continues to take its rightful place in national development”, he said.
With the passage by both chambers, the Bill will now be forwarded to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for assent, paving the way for the official establishment and take-off of the Federal Medical Centre, Obukpa, Enugu State.
