2027: PDP bloc to ratify Jonathan as presidential candidate on Friday

By Ndukaku Ihe

The  Tanimu Turaki led Interim National Working Committee (INWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said it would on Friday, ratify President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 polls.

The exercise, according to a statement by the National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong,  is scheduled to hold in Abuja.

Recently, there have been speculations  that  President Jonathan, who left office 11 years ago, following his defeat by late President Muhammadu Buhari, in the 2015 general election is staging a comeback in the 2027 general election.

Last week, the Presidential and Gubernatorial Screening Committee set up by the INWC, gave Jonathan a waiver to contest the 2027 presidential election as its candidate.

Nonetheless, the former President has neither confirmed nor denied his interest in next year’s presidential poll.

The waiver to President Jonathan  by the Turaki-led INWC for the 2027 polls has added an new twist to the crisis rocking the opposition party.

The PDP, which has been embroiled in a leadership crisis, is currently polarized, with  one of the blocs under  the control  of the Abdulraham Mohammed-led National Working Committee ( NWC).

While the Mohammed camp is backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory ( FCT), Nyesom Wike, the Turaki bloc enjoys the support of the Oyo State governor, who recently defected to the Allied Peoples Movement ( APM).
