CRIME | Houseboy kills university lecturer during argument

A domestic servant (houseboy) has murdered a young lecturer working with the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, according to reports from the area.

The incident happened at Ifite village in Awka, the state capital, on Friday night, July 14, 2023, according to an account of the tragedy by the news portal, 247Ureports.

The paper said it gathered that “the lecturer who belonged to the Psychology Department, simply identified as Chima, was murdered shortly after a brief argument with his houseboy, which led to a fight between the two. “This was corroborated by videos currently trending on the social media, which show the suspect as he confessed to have truly killed the lecturer with a pestle.”

The suspect said in one of the videos: “When he came back, he told me to cook rice. And as I was cooking the rice, he asked me why I did not wash plates. I did not reply him anything. And then, he further asked why I wasn’t responding to his question.

“In the process, he slapped me. But I told him I usually have ears problem, and that people don’t slap me. As I was saying that, he angrily asked if I was still talking while he was talking. And therefore, he slapped me again, and brought out a cane and start flogging me all over. “Then in the process, I got angry, and we started fighting. It was also in the process of that fight that I picked up the pestle in the kitchen and hit him on the head.”

The suspect also confessed to have hit Chima with the pestle up to three times before he stopped, after he had fallen on the ground, in the pool of blood. The video shows the deceased lying lifeless in the hospital bed, while his bereaved relatives gathered to behold and mourn him, alongside his friends and some hospital officials who we are also interrogating the suspect. The suspect, according to 247Ureports, initially “denied knowing anything about Chima’s death, but eventually confessed to the crime after he was tortured by the doctor on duty at the hospital that night.”

“In his confessions, he first said that it was the girlfriend of the deceased who visited him that night that attacked him. However after some more tortures, he eventually confessed that he was the person who killed Chima with pestle,” according to a source quoted by the portal. It quoted another source close to the scene of the incident as alleging that suspect, who hails from Abakaliki in neighbouring Ebonyi State, “bruised the deceased’s body with knife after hitting him to unconsciousness, so as to make it appear as if he was attacked by a third party.”

The Anambra State Police Command has yet to comment on the matter.

CRIME | Police arrest woman caught on video assaulting her aged mother

The Police in Anambra have arrested one Ukamaka Udugbo from Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area of the State for allegedly beating her 75-year-old mother under her care.

The Divisional Police Officer of Abagana Police station, SP Ifeanyi Umeh confirmed the arrest when an NGO, 50-50 Action Group of the WomenAid Collective (WACOL) visited him over the incident.

Umeh said that the police station was informed about how the suspect had been physically assaulting her septuagenarian mother and immediate action initiated which led to the arrest of the accused.

According to Umeh, after investigation and documentation, the case would be transferred to the police command in Awka.

Mrs. Ify Unachukwu, leader of the delegation, thanked the police for the prompt response and urged the force to see that the incident was given due attention to serve as deterrent to others.

Unachukwu described the act as “very unfortunate” for a daughter to beat her aged mother and discouraged young minds from emulating such bad conduct.

The NGO also visited Mrs. Nkiru Okpata, President-General (women wing) of Abagana Community, over the incident.

Okpata said her attention was drawn by a community member to a video trending on the social media on Friday, which showed that the incident happened in her community in Obeagu Umudun, adding that one Mrs Ukamaka Udugbo was identified on the video as the woman physically assaulting her aged mother.

Okpata said she commenced investigation into the matter whereupon it was confirmed, causing her to take action immediately.

“I am shocked because Udugbo is one of the women leaders in the community, both in the church and her village,’ Mrs. Okpata lamented.

“She attends the general meeting where we preach against violence against women.

“We are going to strip her of all her positions in the church and the community because she went against our rules and regulations.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a video went viral of a woman in her 50s, Ukamaka Udugbo, seen beating her aged mother, Mrs Theresa Nwaokaka of Obe-Orofia while bathing her outside her house in Obeagu Umudun in Abagana.

NAN gathered that Nwaokaka had been living in her daughter’s home where she was being taken care of.

The victim’s son, Mr. Emeka Nwaokaka, expressed shock at his sister’s behavior, saying that their mother had been staying with the sister for a long time.

Nwaokaka said that his sister had been remorseful since the incident broke out on social media, describing the act as “confusing”.

Mrs. Eunice Anagor, chairperson of the kindred where Udugbo hails from, assured the group that they would take care of the victim who was receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

Ben Okongwu, President-General of the community, said the issue had been reported to the Divisional police station, assuring that justice would be served.
